Oakthwaite is ideally situated between the villages of Windermere and Bowness on Windermere. It is also an ideal base to discover the many other treats the Lake District has to offer.
Bowness
A short stroll downhill brings you into the heart of the bustling village of Bowness-on-Windermere which is located directly on the shore of this famous Lake. There is a varied selection of restaurants, pubs/inns and a wealth of gift shops as well as The World of Beatrix Potter Attraction and The Old Laundry Theatre.
Windermere
This village is home to the train station and well known Lakeland flagship store (formerly Lakeland Plastics). It has a smaller selection of pubs and restaurants than Bowness but none the less as busy. The main Tourist Information office is also located here, where a walk onto Orrest Head and its fantastic panoramic views starts right on their doorstep.
Ambleside
It can be reached either by road from Windermere or a leisurely boat from Bowness Bay.
This is where a lot of walks can be easily picked up and the large selection of outdoor shops along with cafes and gift shops will certainly keep you busy on the days you can’t make it onto the fells.
Grasmere
Home to the famous Dove Cottage and past home of poet William Wordsworth and not of course forgetting Grasmere gingerbread. This quaint village offers the visitor plenty, as well as the annual Grasmere Sports which attracts a large following. A visit to the Wordsworth Museum or village church is a must. |
